What is neodymium and where does it come from?

When people first encounter a neodymium magnet, they are often surprised by the enormous force that can come from such a small object. A magnet barely larger than a coin can attract several kilograms of weight, while larger ones are so powerful that they must be handled with great caution.

Behind this special property lies a story that begins deep within the Earth's crust. Long before a neodymium magnet is used in a loudspeaker, electric motor, or industrial machine, it consists of raw materials scattered in rocks all over the world.

Neodymium belongs to the group of rare earth metals, a collection of chemical elements that play an important role in modern technology. Despite their name, these metals are not exceptionally rare. The difference from many other raw materials is that they usually do not occur in large concentrated deposits. This makes extraction, separation, and purification technically complex and costly.

Today, neodymium is one of the most important raw materials for the production of permanent magnets. Without this material, many modern technologies would not be possible. From electric vehicles and wind turbines to medical equipment and industrial automation: neodymium magnets play a role everywhere.

The discovery of a new element

The element neodymium was discovered in 1885 by the Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach. At that time, scientists believed that a material called didymium consisted of a single element. However, through careful research, Von Welsbach was able to demonstrate that didymium actually consisted of two different elements. These new elements were named praseodymium and neodymium.

The name neodymium is derived from the Greek neos didymos, which literally means "new twin". This name refers to the discovery that the original material consisted not of one, but of two separate elements.

At that time, no one could have suspected that this relatively unknown metal would become an indispensable raw material for the global energy transition and modern electronics over a century later.

Where is neodymium found?

Neodymium occurs naturally in various minerals rich in rare earth metals. The largest reserves are found in China, Australia, the United States, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Russia.

China has played a dominant role in the extraction and processing of rare earth metals for decades. The Bayan Obo mining area in Inner Mongolia, in particular, is considered one of the most important sources in the world. A significant portion of the neodymium that ultimately ends up in modern magnets originates here.

Before neodymium can be used for the production of magnets, it must first be extracted from the rock. This is done through a combination of mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical processes where the different elements are separated step by step.

The end result is a highly pure neodymium metal suitable for high-quality industrial applications.
