Sewing magnets (3)
Sewing magnets are small neodymium magnets that you sew into or hide inside fabric or leather, allowing bags, covers, wallets, or garments to stay closed without a visible button, zipper, or snap fastener. We offer them in three sizes: Ø12 x 2 mm, Ø18 x 2 mm, and Ø20 x 3 mm. All three are N35, have a NiCuNi coating, and are available directly from stock; orders placed and paid for before 16:00 are shipped the same business day if in stock.
Which sewing magnet should you choose?
| Size | Grade | Coating | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ø12 x 2 mm | N35 | NiCuNi | Thin textiles, small cases, jewelry, fine needlework |
| Ø18 x 2 mm | N35 | NiCuNi | Wallets, pouches, laptop and tablet covers |
| Ø20 x 3 mm | N35 | NiCuNi | Bags, flaps, and heavier materials where you want more closing force |
As a rule of thumb: the larger the magnet, the greater the closing force. If the larger size doesn't fit neatly into your design, choose the next size down or use two of them. Always use two magnets per closure, positioned opposite each other with opposite poles facing one another.

Frequently asked questions
How do you sew in a sewing magnet?
You place the magnet between two layers of fabric or leather, for example in the lining or a flap, and secure it by sewing a seam around it. This keeps it in place and invisible from the outside. Make sure that both magnets are placed with opposite poles facing each other, otherwise, they will repel. Test this before you finish sewing.
How strong is a sewing magnet?
The closing force depends on the size, the distance between the two magnets, and the thickness of the material between them. The thicker the fabric or leather, the weaker the closure. Therefore, choose a larger size for thicker materials.
Can a sewing magnet be put in the washing machine?
We advise removing the magnets before washing. Moisture can affect the coating, and in a washing machine with a strong spin cycle, magnets may strike each other or the drum. It is best to use them in products that you clean by hand.
Are sewing magnets dangerous?
These are powerful neodymium magnets. They are not toys and should be kept out of reach of young children. Keep them away from pacemakers, bank cards, and sensitive electronics, and do not let two magnets snap together.
What temperature can they withstand?
Our N35-grade sewing magnets are suitable for temperatures up to 80 °C. Above that temperature, the magnet may permanently lose strength. Therefore, do not iron directly over a sewn-in magnet.
What does N35 mean?
N35 is a magnet grade. The number indicates how strong the magnetic material is. N35 is a widely used, affordable grade that provides more than enough force for closures in textiles. Read what N35, N42, N48, and N52 mean.
