Closures for bags and laptop sleeves
Sew-in magnets are small neodymium magnets that you integrate into fabric or leather for an invisible closure in bags, laptop sleeves, and wallets. Here is how to choose the right size, sew them in correctly, and avoid common mistakes.
A sewing magnet is a small neodymium magnet that you sew into a bag, laptop sleeve, or wallet so that it stays closed without a visible buckle, snap fastener, or Velcro. The magnets are completely concealed between fabric, leather, or faux leather. Below you can read what they are used for, which size to choose, and how to sew them in properly.
Which sewing magnet is right for your product?
We have sewing magnets in three sizes, all of which are N35 grade with a NiCuNi (nickel-copper-nickel) coating:
- Sewing magnet Ø12 x 2 mm: for thin textiles, small pouches, and delicate craft projects.
- Sewing magnet Ø18 x 2 mm: for wallets, pencil cases, and laptop or tablet sleeves.
- Sewing magnet Ø20 x 3 mm: for bags, flaps, and heavier material where you want more holding power.
The larger the magnet, the greater the holding power. The thickness of the material between the two magnets also plays a role: the thicker the fabric or leather, the weaker the closure. Are you in doubt? Choose the larger size.
What do you use sewing magnets for?
- Laptop sleeves and tablet covers
- Handbags and shoulder bags
- Wallets and pouches
- Document folders
- Phone cases
- Homemade accessories and hobby projects
They are used in both handmade and mass-produced products.
How do you sew in a sewing magnet?
- Determine where the closure will be: one magnet in the flap and one magnet in the corresponding spot on the bag or sleeve.
- Check with the two magnets which sides attract each other and mark those sides. Two identical poles repel each other.
- Place each magnet between two layers of fabric or leather, for example in the lining, and sew a pocket or seam around it so it cannot shift.
- Close the bag or sleeve and test the closure before sewing everything shut permanently.
Why choose sewing magnets?
- Concealed invisibly, for a sleek finish
- Quick to open and close with one hand
- No protruding parts that can get snagged
- Suitable for fabric, leather, and faux leather
Frequently asked questions
How many sewing magnets do I need for one closure?
For a single closure, use two magnets: one in each part that fastens together. For a wide flap, you can make two closures next to each other.
Can a sewing magnet be washed?
We recommend removing the magnets before washing. Moisture can damage the coating. Preferably use them in products that you clean by hand.
Is a sewing magnet harmful to my laptop or bank card?
Keep strong neodymium magnets away from bank cards and pacemakers. In a laptop sleeve, the magnet is in the flap and usually does not lie directly on the screen, but always test the position first. Magnets are not toys and should be kept out of reach of children.
What does N35 mean?
N35 is a commonly used magnet grade that provides more than enough strength for closures in textiles. Read what N35, N42, N48, and N52 mean.
How quickly can I receive sewing magnets?
