Magnets for Camper and Caravan Construction

In a camper or caravan you use magnets for cabinet doors (Ø10 x 3 mm disc magnets), removable panels (countersunk magnets), fly screens and curtains (thin block magnets) and outside on the bodywork (rubber pot magnets). Choose epoxy or plastic where there is moisture and condensation.

Short answer: in a motorhome, caravan or campervan you use magnets for cabinet doors that must stay shut while driving, removable wall and ceiling panels, fly screens, curtains and blackout blinds, and for lighting or cables. Inside you work with disc magnets or countersunk magnets; outside on the bodywork with rubber pot magnets that do not damage the paint. Because of condensation, preferably choose epoxy or plastic-coated magnets.

What to watch out for in a camper?

  • Vibrations: while driving, vibrations pull cabinet doors open. Choose 2 to 3 times more force than at home, and for heavy doors add a mechanical latch.
  • Condensation and moisture: NiCuNi can rust in a cold camper. Use epoxy or plastic, or glue the magnet in completely. See can magnets be used outdoors?
  • Heat: behind a roof window in the sun it can exceed 80 °C. See magnets at high temperatures.
  • Surface: polyester and aluminium walls are not magnetic. Then work with two magnets or a steel counter plate.
  • Paint: outside on the vehicle always a rubber version, never a bare pot magnet.

For a light door, two Ø10 x 5 mm disc magnets (approx. 3.1 kg each). For a door with crockery behind it, an extra mechanical catch.

Can a magnet stay on the bodywork while driving?

Light items can, with a generously sized rubber pot magnet. Do not use magnets for heavy loads or items that are dangerous if they come loose.
