When do you use a rubber protective cap with a magnet?

A self-adhesive rubber protective disc protects surfaces from scratches and provides a magnet with more grip. Here is how to choose the right size and what to keep in mind regarding holding power.

A self-adhesive rubber protective disc is placed between a magnet and a surface. The disc protects delicate surfaces from scratches and increases the grip of pot magnets on smooth materials such as glass, paint, and plastic. Below, you can read when this is useful, how to choose the right size, and what to look out for.

What do you use a protective disc for?

  • Preventing scratches: A metal magnet can scratch a smooth or painted surface. The rubber disc sits between them.
  • More grip: On smooth materials like glass, paint, and plastic, a magnet slides away more easily. Rubber provides more grip.

Which size should you choose?

You should choose a disc with approximately the same diameter as your magnet. Our discs are available in Ø20, Ø25, Ø30, Ø40, and Ø50 mm. They are made of rubber, are self-adhesive, and resistant up to 80 °C. Check beforehand if the disc fits your magnet.

Disc diameter Fits magnets of approximately
Ø20 mm Ø20 mm
Ø25 mm Ø25 mm
Ø30 mm Ø30 mm
Ø40 mm Ø40 mm
Ø50 mm Ø50 mm

Pay attention to the holding power

An extra layer between the magnet and the surface increases the distance between the two. This can limit the holding power. Therefore, always test if the combination is strong enough for your application. Also, read how the holding power of a magnet is determined.

Protective disc or rubber-coated magnet?

If the magnet already has a rubber coating, a separate disc is usually not necessary. You can read about the differences between NiCuNi, epoxy, plastic, and rubber in our guide which coating or finish should you choose?
