What is a pot magnet?
A pot magnet consists of a powerful neodymium magnet placed in a steel casing, also known as the "pot." This steel pot is much more than just protection; it forms an essential part of the magnetic system.
Where an ordinary magnet disperses its magnetic field all around, the magnetic field of a pot magnet is directed to one side by the steel casing. This creates a much higher holding force on the contact surface.
How does the steel pot work?
The steel pot functions as a magnetic circuit.
Normally, part of the magnetic field is lost through the sides and back of a magnet. In a pot magnet, the steel casing captures these field lines and directs them back to the working surface.
As a result, almost all magnetic energy is concentrated on one side of the magnet. The result is a much higher holding force than a loose magnet of the same dimensions.
Why is the holding force so much higher?
A loose neodymium magnet radiates its magnetic field all around.
In a pot magnet, this field is bundled towards the contact surface. This creates a higher flux density at the point where the magnet makes contact with steel.
This explains why a relatively small pot magnet often holds more strongly than a larger loose disc magnet.
When does a pot magnet achieve its maximum holding force?
The specified holding force is only achieved under ideal conditions:

- A clean surface
- Sufficient material thickness (preferably solid steel)
Paint, rust, dirt, coatings, or an air gap between the magnet and steel can significantly reduce the holding force.
